Balancing Security, Safety and Trust While Expanding
As the company grows, Staccato faced a critical challenge: maintaining comprehensive safety and security across its diverse operations. From active forklift zones in manufacturing to personnel and guest safety at their office and ranges, the facility requires careful monitoring to protect employees, visitors, and assets. Staccato's leadership recognized that traditional monitoring systems were no longer sufficient—they needed a sophisticated solution that could provide proactive surveillance and automated incident response across their entire campus.
"We don't have security guards or metal detectors - we trust our employees," explains Mike Tiller, Director of Technology at Staccato. "But we'd like to validate that trust when possible, especially given the nature of what we manufacture."
The company faced multiple operational challenges: Their manufacturing and range areas required consistent monitoring of personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, while their showcase areas needed to minimize tailgating incidents and boost after-hours security. At their experience center, managing large events required careful tracking of visitor flow and ensuring range safety compliance. Recent incidents, including a forklift accident, highlighted the need for enhanced safety monitoring without compromising operational efficiency.
Shifting to a Proactive, Always-on Approach with Spot AI
Staccato was already using a modern camera system with analytics capabilities, but after successfully implementing AI solutions in other areas of their business, Mike and his team recognized the potential for leveraging the latest AI capabilities for their video system as well.
"In our old approach, we were always reactionary," says Tiller. "We'd review footage after an incident occurred, but we needed to move beyond that. With facilities spread across 800 acres, it's impossible for our team to see everything happening in real-time."
After evaluating options, they chose Spot AI for several key reasons. The platform offered seamless integration with their existing cameras and provided an intuitive interface that required minimal training for their team members. Additionally, the camera system is helping them proactively solve key business needs in safety, security and operations with Video AI Agents. And the implementation was rapid - moving from first conversation to full deployment in just seven weeks.
"The question was, ‘how do we get more out of our existing systems?’" explains Tiller. "We needed something that could transform our camera system from a passive recording tool into a proactive partner in safety and security."
Video AI Agents as a Force Multiplier
Spot AI's Video AI Agents serve as an extra set of eyes and hands across Staccato's campus, combining advanced object detection, environmental context awareness, and behavioral analysis to drive real-time outcomes. The system goes beyond simple motion detection or analytics, instead using AI to understand complex scenarios and take automated actions.
"What impressed me was the system's ability to understand context," says Tiller. "For example, we needed different rules for range safety officers versus the general public when it comes to PPE requirements. The AI Agents were smart enough to recognize known staff members and adjust their monitoring and actions accordingly."
Video AI Agents help Staccato across three key areas:
Enhanced Safety and Compliance
The system continuously monitors PPE compliance, particularly eye protection in manufacturing areas and hearing protection at the shooting ranges, distinguishing between different zones and applying appropriate rules based on location and personnel. For forklift operations, the team aims to track movement patterns and identify hazards before they lead to accidents.
Proactive Security
Beyond basic surveillance, the AI Agents provide intelligent monitoring of showcase areas and access points. "We've set up the system to understand normal versus abnormal behavior," Tiller explains. "If someone's in our lobby showcase area after hours, or if there's unusual movement patterns around sensitive areas, the system alerts us immediately."
Video AI Agents also help prevent tailgating incidents by monitoring entry points and detecting when multiple people enter on a single badge swipe. "Before implementing this system, tracking tailgating relied entirely on human observation," says Tiller. "Now we receive instant alerts when someone holds the door open or if multiple people enter in quick succession, allowing us to address security protocols in real-time rather than after the fact."
Improving Operations
The platform has proven valuable during large events at their experience center by validating waiver completion for all attendees while providing accurate headcounts, ensuring proper security protocols are maintained even during peak periods, streamlining event management and reducing bottlenecks in visitor flow.
What’s Next
While still early in their implementation, Staccato is already seeing significant benefits from the system, particularly around visitor tracking and safety compliance. The company plans to expand deployment across their manufacturing facilities and sister companies, including their ammunition and precision manufacturing operations.
"The technology has to serve a purpose beyond just having AI for AI's sake," Tiller emphasizes. "What we've found with Spot AI is a partner that helps us enhance our operations in meaningful ways. The value goes beyond traditional ROI metrics - it's about creating a safer, more secure environment while maintaining the trust we place in our team."
Looking ahead, Staccato plans to use the proactive nature of the system to drive more positive behavioral change around safety protocols, support their ISO certification efforts, and enhance compliance reporting. They're also exploring more technology integrations and expanding their use of AI Agents across their dynamic operations.
"We're fortunate to have leadership that understands the value of innovation," concludes Tiller. "Sometimes the benefits aren't directly tied to revenue - it's about building a better, safer workplace and knowing we're doing everything we can to protect our people and assets."
